International assignment for Tinley Manor karate kid Xander
He took up karate at age six and says it is more than just a sport, but part of his life.
Young Tinley Manor karateka Xander Links has been selected to represent South Africa at the WKF Youth Cup tournament in Croatia from July 1-3.
Before that he is competing in the AUCS region south championships in Durban this week as a member of the SA Protea team, and next week in the Arnold Classic tournament in Johannesburg – all in preparation for the Youth Cup outing.
The young fighter earned medals at different tournaments recently, including the K1 Bloemfontein League on April 23.
“I received my second Dan Black Belt (Ni- dan) and Junior Protea colours. Karate has not only helped me physically but also trained me mentally.”
He doesn’t neglect his academic work, however, and received his honours for academics as well.
His father, Nicolas Links, also a karateka, is proud of his son’s progress.
“Under the guidance of SKISA, Shihan Brando Pillay and Hanshi Sonny Pillay, Xander’s growth has been rapid and the hours and years of hard work and dedication are now paying off.”
Xander’s next aim is to qualify for the 10th Commonwealth Karate Championships in Birmingham, England in September.
The cost of the Croatia trip is more than
R30 000 and Nicolas said any sponsorship for the young man would be much appreciated.
