Palm Lakes’ Shirley Rodgers (75) celebrates 100th parkrun

Not an athlete before, Shirley first started running when the trail opened about five years ago.

The 5km parkruns – held in towns and cities throughout the world every Saturday – is small fry for 75-year-old Palm Lakes resident, Shirley Rodgers.

The seasoned jogger/walker completed her 100th local parkrun on May 7 at Tinley Manor, where flood-damaged facilities had been repaired two weeks earlier.

Shirley’s husband Roy and son Kevin organised a fundraiser among the trail’s users to support restoration efforts and

R2 000 was raised to help complete the job.

“I’m really excited about having completed my 100th outing in a time of 50 minutes and 33 seconds,” she said, noting that it won’t be too long before she reaches the 200 mark.
