Sheffield Beach mountain biker Daniel jets to bundu win at Tronox’s Race in the Shade

Another local, Mondli Dladla of Holla Trails, also flew the North Coast flag by finishing third.

As first officer flying Cathay Pacific’s Airbus A350s, Sheffield Beach’s Daniel Carleton knows all about high flying.

But the 37-year-old fitness junkie is equally adept at low flying in the bundu on his mountain bike.

Living in Hong Kong for the past seven years, Daniel and his family are currently back at his old stomping ground for a post-Covid holiday visit to parents David and Sue, and he decided to go for an outing at last Sunday’s Tronox 55km Race in the Shade in Mtunzini – and won it in a time of 2hrs 16min 41sec.

Perhaps not all that surprising, given that pedal power and stamina is in his DNA, having won the Xterra age group off-road triathlon world championships in Hawaii in 2011.

Wife Shannon, a high school teacher in Hong Kong, shares her husband’s passion for mountain biking.

They often race together, and in 2019 she and a partner won the women’s category of the monster Sani2C Adventure race.
