Honouring Chief Albert Luthuli’s legacy

The walk on July 23 will mark 52 years since the death of Chief Albert Luthuli who lived, taught and passed away in Groutville near KwaDukuza.

The popular Luthuli Walk, which celebrates the life and legacy of one of South Africa’s greatest men, returns to Groutville next month.

The walk is one of the most significant sport and cultural events on the municipal calendar and is supported by the KwaDukuza and iLembe municipalities.

At the launch held at the Luthuli Museum in Groutville last week, representatives from the municipalities, museum and the provincial MEC for Sport, all reflected on Chief Luthuli’s life.

“His legacy is one that is united in peace and prosperity. This fun run will drive cultural tourism, development and sport in Groutville, KwaDukuza and iLembe at large,” said museum council chair, Important Mkhize.

The walk follows a similar route to the one which Chief Luthuli took on his final day, when he was killed by a train.

This allows those taking part to reflect on his life – the first person of African descent to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for his non-violent struggle against Apartheid.

There is an option for both walkers and runners alike on the day, with an 11.5km fun walk or 7.7km fun run available.

The events will start at the Luthuli Museum and end at the Groutville sport grounds.

Entries are open until July 20, with the fun walk costing R100 and the fun run R120. Seniors (60+) will pay half price.

Aside from the walk, there are a number of other exciting events happening at the museum during Luthuli Week – a coding tournament, film screenings, outdoor exhibitions and a jazz concert which will be held on July 22.

During the launch, KwaDukuza mayor, Lindile Nhaca confirmed her entry into the walk and challenged the provincial MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Hlengiwe Havimbela, to do the same.

Both will be joining the historic event, be sure to visit luthuliwalk.org.za to do the same.
