Top notch performance sees surfer Luke Thompson claim U18 Junior Ballito Pro title
Local surfer Luke Thompson walked away as the under 18, 2022 O'Neill SMTH Shapes Ballito Pro Junior champion after fighting off strong challenges from Luke van Wyk (second) and Connor Slijpen (third).
The Ballito Pro surfing competition got off to an action-packed start yesterday at Willard beach.
The 18-year-old Thompson, from Durban, recently won overall third place at the International Surfing Association (ISA) Junior World Championships in El Salvador.
“I have been competing in different competitions as a build-up for the Ballito Pro and I am so happy that I managed to win,” said Thompson.
Adriel Wolmarans won the U18 girls category, with Aimee du Preez finishing second and Demi Rowe third.
Ryan Kainalo won the U16 boys and Anastasia Venter the girls U16 finals.

After the junior competition, the Sea Harvest development tag team event followed, which was won by the iLembe Surfriders consisting of Romeo Mthethwa, Antonio Mthethwa, Andile Makhathini, Wonderboy Sipingo, Nqubeko Nzuza and coach Thapelo Mthethwa.

The school’s tag team competition was won by Durban’s Clifton School. Clifton’s Nate Colby walked away with R5 000 for the highest scoring wave.
