Ballito Dolphins dedicate final season game to late teammate, Guy Jenkinson

The Mandeni-based rugby player was known for his infectious laugh and compassion for people.

Playing their last match of the season against Maritzburg Rugby Club at the Maidstone rugby ground on Saturday, Ballito Dolphins players dedicated the day in memory of team-mate and flanker Guy Jenkinson, who died earlier this month.

The field was packed with supporters, the majority from Mandeni, Guy’s home town.

As much as the field was filled with laughter and joy, something Guy was known for, proceedings turned solemn the moment his jersey was laid on the ground by the club chairman
Mark Svenningsen before the kickoff.

Both teams kneeled down and observed a moment of silence.

Svenningsen said rugby was often referred to as a brotherhood, but no one embodied the meaning of brotherhood more than Guy.

“A true team man who travelled more than 100km twice a week from his workplace for practice, he always ensured that Mandeni boys were represented at all socials,” said
Svenningsen.

The Jenkinson family: Guy’s mother, Wilma, Maryna(sister) and his father Edward.

His sister, Maryna Jenkinson, said her brother would have turned 28 in October and was known for his infectious laugh and compassion for people.

“On behalf of the family, we would like to thank the coaching staff, players and all the spectators who came out to help celebrate and honour my brother’s life.

“It meant a great deal to my family to be surrounded by all the love and support from all those who knew and loved him,” said Maryna.

Ballito Dolphins played gallantly but lost 12 – 21.
