Tinley Manor karateka Xander lines up next international fight
R22 000 was raised for his failed trip to Croatia, which is half of the money needed for the trip to England.
After missing the opportunity of competing at the WKF Youth Cup tournament in Croatia this month, Tinley Manor karateka Xander Links is now preparing for the 10th Commonwealth Karate Federation Championships to be held in Birmingham, England in September.
Owing to delays with the issuing of his passport, Links was unable to make the trip to Croatia.
He thanked everyone that donated towards this.
“The donations have not been in vain, however, as these will be directed towards my trip to Birmingham,” he said.
Before the Croatian trip he competed in the AUSC Region South Championships in Durban, where he claimed a silver medal fighting against top karatekas from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique, Angola and South Africa.
He went one better, winning a gold medal at the Arnold Classic KSA Open/Elite Championships held in Johannesburg.
Xander received his Protea certificates at the KSA Protea Awards ceremony held at Sastri College on July 16.
“The experience was electrifying, to gather with the best of the best when the Protea team was honoured for their achievements. I felt proud and honoured to be part of the team and to be celebrated for representing my country,” he said.
His father, Nicolas, said R22 000 was raised for the failed trip to Croatia, which is half of the money needed for the trip to England.
