iLembe women’s football team win gold at SALGA Games

Four other golds were earned in specific sub-events, with the team adding eight silver medals and 11 bronze medals to the tally.

iLembe’s young sportsmen and -women brought home 24 medals from last week’s South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Games.

The SALGA Games is an annual sporting competition that brings KwaZulu-Natal’s 11 municipalities together to face off across 13 sporting codes.

This year, the games were held in Newcastle, with iLembe grabbing their only overall gold in the female football event.

iLembe’s karate team which won bronze at the SALGA Games, with KwaDukuza councillor Nerish Singh and iLembe deputy-mayor James van Whye. The team also grabbed gold for freestyle karate.

Four other golds were earned in specific sub-events however, with the team adding eight silver medals and 11 bronze medals to the tally.

In terms of overall medals, iLembe took silver in chess, with bronzes in dance, karate and male football.

eThekwini dominated proceedings to lead the medal table with 131 and finish first overall, with iLembe taking eighth place.
