North Coast trail runners ring in new year

With temperatures breaching the 30 degree mark, runners were well and truly tested.

More than 500 intrepid runners braced the stifling North Coast heat on Sunday to take on the Zululami Seaton Trail Run.

The event was the second of three runs held by KZN Trail Running in their Coastal Series, after it kicked off in Rocky Bay earlier this month.

With temperatures breaching the 30 degree mark, runners were well and truly tested over three distances – 18km, 10km and 6km.

This follows the format used by KZN Trail Running in most of their 40 runs scheduled in 2023, culminating in their flagship event, the Karkloof 100 Miler.

Runners were forced to deal with high temperatures on Sunday’s run, but remained in good spirits.

It was the fifth time that Zululami Seaton was used as a location since 2020, with Sunday’s run featuring the third new starting point, ensuring runners have a different experience every time.

Conquering the heat and tricky course, Eric Ngubane (1:23.48) and Leah Sloman (1:46.50) led their respective gender to deliver fantastic times in the 18km.

Champ Piri (48:22) and Andy O’Reilly (1:04.06) took first places in the 10km run, with Mthonisi Ntanzi (23.16) and Lindi Meyer (27:58) rounding out the winner’s circle in the 6km.

Panoramic sea views certainly helped keep runners’ minds off their tired legs.

These results are preliminary and still need to be confirmed, so small changes may be made before becoming official later this week.

Although the run featured some fantastic athletes and times, KZN Trail Running encourages people of all ages and fitness levels to join.

The final event in the 2023 Coastal Series will take place at Honey Trails in Camperdown on January 29, with the next event on the North Coast to be held at Zululami Seaton on October 15.
