Ballito surfer Zedde continues unbeatable form
Results continue to show the strength of the next generation of surfers on the North Coast after iLembe won the Grommet Games for the first time two weeks ago.
Zimbali’s Marcello Zedde has done it again, claiming his third in a hat-trick of Rip Curl GromSearch surfing wins at the weekend.
The GromSearch series is the premier competition for under-18 surfers in the country and Zedde has so far blown his U12 Boys rivals away.
Last weekend’s event was the third of five and the first surfed in KwaZulu-Natal, with competitors paddling out at Scottburgh in good conditions.
He breezed through his quarter-final, scoring nine points more than second place, before a tighter semi-final where his main competition was iLembe Surf Riders teammate, Levi Vosloo.
The duo traded blows throughout the session, eventually being separated by just 0.05 points, with Zedde (9.05) eking out Vosloo (9.0).
It was almost an all-iLembe affair in the final, with Zedde and Vosloo joined by Sean Tayler, who had also won his quarter- and semi-final in fine form.

Tayler led for much of the final after reaching his 9.26 total after four waves, but Zedde kept pushing to clinch a 5.5 on his ninth wave to claim victory with a total of 10.38.
Vosloo capped a good category for the North Coast, claiming bronze with an 8.35.
The win leaves Zedde in good company, with only Maya Malherbe in the U12 Girls also remaining unbeaten.
It is now a long wait until the final two events however, as surfers travel to Port Alfred at the end of July and St Francis at the end of September to complete the series.
Elsewhere in the competition, iLembe’s youngsters reached a further four finals.
Maxine Kauffman (U14 Girls, 6.50) and Mayah Potgieter (U18 Girls, 8.38) both claimed bronze medals, while Nathan Tayler (U14 Boys, 6.71) and Catherine Jacob (U16 Girls, 5.30) both finished in fourth in their categories.
