Belchester Futsal team charge to national champs
Belchester will be in action from the second game of the day on Saturday when they take on Mustangs FC.
Tongaat’s Belchester Futsal Club have conquered KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and are gearing up for a national challenge this weekend.
Belchester beat out clubs from across KZN earlier this month to earn their spot in the national championships, which includes five other teams drawn from around the country.
Maritzburg FC is the other provincial hopeful at the futsal (5-a-side indoor soccer) tournament, which will be held at the University of KZN Westville campus on Saturday and Sunday.
The other qualified teams are Soweto FC and Orlando Pirates Fives from Gauteng, Mustangs FC from Cape Town and GQ Elephants from Gqeberha.
All teams play each other once in a round robin format after which the top four progress to the semi-final knockout stage.
“Our expectations are riding high following our recent success within KZN. Many a game prior to this we were regarded as underdogs and we will carry forward this mentality into this tournament to minimize the pressure on the team,” said club captain, Vinay Sookdhoo.
Belchester will be in action from the second game of the day on Saturday when they take on Mustangs FC at 9.45am.
Their last game in the group stage will be at 6pm that evening, which means a large part of their potential success relies on staying engaged and focused throughout the long day of competition.
“We have put in the hours for training and ensured that our players maintain discipline on and off the field of play. As much as we want to be crowned ultimate champions, we understand that desire, heart, skill, and a bit of luck for all teams will play a big part in who will win this tournament,” said coach, Tovey Ramnarain.
