Marcello Zedde shreds waves for victory in U12 boys division at Rip Curl GromSearch
Zedde kept his cool, dominating the division throughout with scores of 10.50 in the quarter-finals and 8.83 in the semis.
Zimbali’s surf ace, Marcello Zedde, rode to victory again in the U12 boys division of the Rip Curl GromSearch, winning the final leg of the series at Seal Point, St Francis Bay, at the weekend.
Firmly positioned at the top of the South African Surf Tour (SAST) standings with 6 000 points, Zedde’s first heat at the weekend saw him face off against Sebastian Copson of Kommetjie and iLembe’s Tyler Balfour.
Zedde kept his cool, dominating the division throughout with scores of 10.50 in the quarter-finals and 8.83 in the semis.
Up against Levi Vosloo, Valdemar Gwenin and Harry Walton in the final, Zedde held his own to finish first with a score of 10.70. Vosloo and Gwenin claimed second and third place respectively.
iLembe campaigner Sean Tayler scored 9.60 and second place in the same division in the quarter-finals to secure a semi-final run, where he placed fourth with 3.80 before being knocked out.
Despite this, Tayler does have enough points to secure a spot right behind Zedde on the SAST points standing on 4 650 points.
In the U14 boys division, local surfers Nathan Tayler and Rylie Balfour claimed third and fourth places respectively.
Again, while neither won at the weekend, Tayler garnered enough points to secure the top spot on the SAST rankings with 5 460 points, with Balfour in seventh place with
3 730 points.
In the U14 girls division, all eyes were on local talent Maxine Kauffman who scored 9.40 in her first heat, the top spot going to Leah Lepront with 11.63.
Kauffman kept her composure to advance from the semi-finals through to the finals, where she landed fourth place with a score of 5.47. She finished eighth on the SAST list with 2 680 points.
Overall winners of the Rip Curl GromSearch were Scottburgh’s Louise Lepront and Melkbos surfer Levi Epenetos.
