iLembe surfer Max barrels her way into world champs

Surfing champion Max Kauffman has been selected to compete in the 2024 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in El Salvador from May 3-12.

KwaZulu-Natal and iLembe U14 girls surfing champion Max Kauffman has taken a significant step up in her wave riding career.

She has been selected for the South African junior surfing team to compete in the 2024 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in El Salvador from May 3-12.

Her South African blazer is well earned, based on a consistent record of achievements in her competitive campaign last year and finishing fourth in the SA junior trials earlier this year.

Apart from winning the 2023 KZN and iLembe titles, she finished among the top four in the Rip Curl Grom search in Scottburgh, O’Neill SMTH Shapes Rookie Rippers competition in Ballito, the Sea Harvest Junior Championships in Jeffrey’s Bay and the Rip Curl Grom search #5 at Seal Point, Cape Francis.

Max is ecstatic after being selected for the SA junior team.

Max was also invited to surf with professional campaigners at Rising Tides in Jbay.

However, as is the case with so many young sport stars, with the euphoria of being selected to represent one’s country comes the reality of finding the funds to fulfil the dream opportunity.

In Max’s case costs to cover travel, accommodation, entry fees and sundries will come to around R70 000.

With time fast running out before she leaves for El Salvador on April 27, mom Sally and some supporters have organised some fundraising initiatives through raffles, donations and a back-a-buddy campaign.

Anybody wishing to contribute can call Sally at 082 824 7520.
