Endurance for a cause: Ballito activist to run Mont-Aux Sources to fund mental health support

Rex Hunt runs the Against Drugs and Child Abuse (ADCA) non-profit in Umhlali.

Ballito’s Rex Hunt will soon test the limits of his own mental strength to raise awareness and funds for the treatment of mental health issues.

He will do so by tackling the punishing 20km Mont-Aux Sources trail run at the height of the Drakensberg mountain range on September 7.

A longtime campaigner for mental health awareness, Rex runs the Against Drugs and Child Abuse (ADCA) non-profit in Umhlali and is a qualified mental health and recovery coach.

He runs recovery programmes for people battling both addiction and mental health issues.

As part of those courses, Rex said he finds it helpful for people to set goals that they can achieve through consistent work and mental persistence.

His run in the Drakensberg is much the same thing and will see Rex test the limits of his personal endurance.

“The run itself is as much mental as it is a physical challenge,” he said.

The physical aspect is a 20km trail at over 1 500m above sea level, starting and finishing at the Mahai campsite in the valley of the Tugela Falls.

Rex said he has been doing some extra training for the event, but that his running philosophy is more about consistency.

“I haven’t really stopped running since I started doing trails four-and-a-half years ago,” he said. “I’ve completed some of the bigger KZN trails such as Oxpecker and Umfolozi, but this will be my first Mont-Aux Sources challenge.”

As for the fundraising, all donations will go back into ADCA, which offers both free and paid resources for recovery. There is individual and group counselling available with something to suit every person’s recovery or mental health journey.

Rex also runs a weekly feeding programme which provides hot meals to over 500 people in Groutville and Shaka’s Head. To donate or to find out more about where the donated funds will go, visit adca.co.za
