Ballito’s Ferrandi brothers smash their way to padel glory
Local teams triumph in Balwin KZN Championships.
Two North Coast padel duos claimed home court victory in the Balwin KZN Padel Tournament at Karibu Padel on Sunday.
Brothers Waylon and Janek Ferrandi won the men’s 3-4.5 division, while Mark McCarthy and Wesley Singleton matched them in the men’s 1-3 group.

The teams were among 71 from around the country that played in the weekend tournament. Teams were split into six divisions, namely men’s 4+, 3-4.5 and 1-3, women’s 3+ and 1-3 and mixed 3+. Padel ratings work on a weighted scale, with 1-3 considered beginner, 3-5 intermediate, 5-6 advanced and 6+ semi-professional to professional.

The Ferrandis are both around the 4.2 mark, which meant they were among the highest rated in their division and quickly proved why.
In round robin day on Saturday at PadelNation in Umhlanga, the Ferrandi’s went 4-0, later winning their semi-final on Sunday morning to set up a well-supported final. The brothers took down Balwin’s head of padel Sebastian Brokmann and his partner JP van Antwerpen in straight sets to claim a popular victory.

“It was great to be out there with my brother and to grab the win. We have really been enjoying playing more tournaments recently,” said Waylon.
The Ferrandi brothers come from a talented tennis family and have been playing padel together since the sport first landed in Ballito in 2022.

“We play together pretty regularly in the ladder at Eden Padel and obviously have good communication on the court,” he said.
“I’m a lefty and he’s right handed which also helps.”

Ballito’s other winning duo did lose once on their way to the final, but won the big games when it mattered. In their final against Nik Soni and Nick Demetriou, Mark and Wesley won 6-4, 7-6 to take a straight set victory.

Elsewhere, the men’s 4+ division was won by Spanish padel legend and former world champion Willy Lahoz and his partner, Jason Blakey-Milner. The win was Lahoz’s ninth in South Africa this year. Marne Roos and Debbie van Aswegen won the women’s 3+, Liska Thom and Gemma Jansen took the women’s 1-3 and Shaun Leagas and Pam Hayward claimed the mixed 3+ title.
