Dawnheights CC veterans hold firm to grab comeback victory against Toti
The men from KwaDukuza looked dead and buried before a fiery bowling spell turned the tide.
Dawnheights Cricket Club’s veterans put on a show-stopping performance to defeat Toti Vets on Saturday.
After winning the toss at the Toti Oval, Dawnheights captain Nicky Misra chose to bat and the team from KwaDukuza got started on setting a big score in their allotted 30 overs.
Toti struck early on, but Preshen Rampershad and Rajen Naidoo steadied the ship with scores of 67 and 40. They contributed the lion’s share of the runs and Dawnheights ended on a respectable 159 for 6, with Toti’s Hendrik Nienaber and Carl Labuschagne grabbing two wickets apiece.
Kevin Chitungo took an early scalp for Dawnheights in the second innings, but Toti’s second-wicket partnership of 88 put the South Coast team in the ascendancy. Dawnheights’ bowlers were not going to take a loss lying down, however, and Chitungo, Misra and Suveer Maharaj produced an excellent spell which saw Toti falter from 93 for 1 to 123 for 8 within 10 overs.
The final two wickets were claimed soon after and the travelling team earned victory by 21 runs. Chitungo and Maharaj were the chief destroyers with three wickets each, while wicket-keeper Rampershad added a few crucial catches and stumpings.
Misra congratulated the team on some strong mental resilience, while praising the sharp fielding and top bowling effort.
