Dawnheights Veterans bat away early season woes with solid victory

A Preshen Rampersadh half-century helped the men from KwaDukuza to chase down 138.

Dawnheights Cricket Club Veterans put on an excellent display to claim their first win of the season against Amanzimtoti Veterans on Saturday.

The match marked Dawnheights’ third game of the KZNCU Veterans T20 competition following a first-week rain cancellation and narrow loss to Railways Veterans in week two. The men from KwaDukuza therefore arrived to face Amanzimtoti eager to improve their league position and chose to bowl first after winning the toss.

Economical bowling and a flurry of wickets from Kevin Chinechu and Avishkar Ramduth limited early run-scoring opportunities, but the South Coast team rallied to a defendable score of 138/7.

Man of the match, Preshen Rampersadh.

In reply, Dawnheights made a confident start to their chase as openers Zulfiqar Ali and Rajendren Naidoo provided a strong platform with scores of 23 and 34, respectively. While the game was still in the balance, Preshen Rampersadh strolled to the crease and took it beyond the reach of Amanzimtoti. He anchored the innings with a superb knock of 53 off 45 balls, helping Dawnheights to 139/3 and a 7-wicket victory.

Captain Mags Iyer praised the team’s composure and said the performance reflected “discipline, teamwork and experience – the hallmarks of Dawnheights Veterans cricket.”
