Tongaat Panthers remember past legends with memorial walk

The walk was observed by members as far afield as Scotland and Japan.

The Tongaat Panthers Athletics Club paid tribute to past members who helped build the community with a well-attended memorial walk last weekend.

More than 200 walkers took to Tongaat’s streets, while former members joined virtually from as far afield as Scotland and Japan. Once the walk was complete, surviving family members were invited to light a candle and accept posthumous awards in honour of their loved ones.

A strong turnout for the Tongaat Panthers memorial walk reflects the club’s community spirit.

Club chairman Lajeeth Maharaj said he was touched by the turnout and support.

“My heartfelt thanks to our members for the excellent display of teamwork in executing a most memorable function,” he said.

“I have been involved in and convened many successful Tongaat Panthers functions over our 32-year history, but today will stand out as our most satisfying and heart-warming of them all.”
