The iLembe Sharks overcame a shaky start to secure a hard-earned bronze medal at the recent U13 district tournament.

The defending champions finished third among 14 district teams after recovering from an opening defeat and a draw to produce an impressive run through the remainder of the competition.

Chairman Jake Kritzinger said every match after the opening two fixtures became a must-win encounter.
“Our tournament got off to a slow start, losing our opening match and drawing our second. From that point onwards, every game felt like a final as we had to play catch-up football,” he said.

Kritzinger said the team faced challenges throughout the season, with many players also representing their schools, districts and provinces in rugby and hockey, making it difficult to train together consistently.

Despite this, the players quickly gelled and displayed remarkable determination, playing eight matches on the first day and a further four on the second.

“They showed outstanding unity, resilience and character throughout the tournament. In every game they gave everything they had and never stopped fighting for one another,” he said.

As defending champions, the Sharks also carried the added pressure of being the team every opponent wanted to beat.

“Even when opponents managed to draw against us, their celebrations showed the respect they had for what this team has achieved over the past two years.”

Kritzinger said the team’s conduct throughout the tournament made him especially proud.

“The respect they showed towards coaches, referees and their opponents was exceptional. They represented iLembe with sportsmanship and pride, and that is something that cannot be measured by medals alone.”

The tournament also saw four iLembe players selected for the final KwaZulu-Natal U13 squad that will compete at next year’s Bill Stewart Tournament.

Kritzinger also praised coaches Shane Duncan and Gavin Reddy, saying their work behind the scenes was instrumental to the team’s success. From organising kits and sponsorships to ensuring the players had refreshments, completed their warm-ups and were ready for each match, the pair created an environment where the boys could perform at their best.

“Winning titles is special, but building young men who compete with humility and respect is what coaching is really about. This group reminded me why I love this game,” he said.
