Ballito obstacle course racer Aristo Kirk Nolan recently claimed silver at the South African Obstacle Course Racing Championships, earning another opportunity to represent the country at the World Championships in Beijing, China.

The 29-year-old finished second against the country’s best athletes, securing his place among South Africa’s top three elite male competitors selected for the championships, which take place from September 2 to 6.

Nolan described the achievement as the biggest milestone of his sporting career after taking up obstacle course racing just three years ago.

“I got into the sport after hanging up my rugby boots. I needed a new challenge and running has always been a passion. OCR combines fitness and pure grit, which was ingrained in me on the rugby field,” he said.

A sport scientist and coach, Nolan trained himself from scratch.

“Silver represents the hard work, consistency and sacrifices that have gone into my training. The competition was incredibly strong, so earning a silver medal confirmed that I’m moving in the right direction as an athlete.”

This will be Nolan’s second appearance at the World Championships after competing in Sweden last year.
“Last year taught me what it takes to compete at the highest level. I learned a lot about race strategy, pacing, obstacle efficiency and the standard of international competition. I’ve taken those lessons into my training and I feel far better prepared for Beijing.”

His goal is to improve on last year’s performance while representing South Africa alongside teammates Brandon Hulley and Warren Whittson.

“My main goal is to compete to the best of my ability, make South Africa proud and continue growing as an athlete. I also want to set an example for my baby on the way. None of this would be possible without the support of my wife and family.”

Although he has qualified, Nolan still needs to raise about R35 000 to cover travel and competition costs. He has launched a BackaBuddy campaign and is appealing to businesses and the community for support.
