Salt Rock yachtsman Thomas Funke was recently awarded the Owen Aisher Trophy as the 2025 South African Sailor of the Year.

The annual award is given to the person considered to have made the greatest contribution to sailing in South Africa during the year of eligibility.

As rear commodore for youth at Point Yacht Club, Funke (44) has become known for his work inspiring young sailors. He also competes regularly across a variety of classes with his sons, Kai and Gust, as well as his brother Peter, continuing a hobby they learnt from their father.

“My dad took me out as a baby. I very quickly got onto Dabbies in 1990 and haven’t looked back! I love racing 505s – the speed, the adrenaline. It’s such fun!” said Funke.

Most recently, the Funke brothers competed in the 505 World Championships off Hayling Island in the UK, finishing 32nd in a fleet of 90.

“The worlds were great. Massively competitive and one of the toughest events I have sailed. It was really fulfilling to be part of it,” he said.

“I am glad to be back home. We have some of the best sailing conditions in the world. I am also happy to share that we have submitted a bid to host the 505 World Championships in Durban. The year is still to be confirmed, but it will be either 2029 or 2031. Exciting times ahead!”

Funke now looks ahead to the Mirror KZN Regionals in October, before a packed summer season as Point Yacht Club celebrates its 135th birthday. Follow the club’s social media pages or visit pyc.co.za for more information.
