Umhlali shines at winter sports festival

Umhlali Preparatory School pupils showed that they are not scared of the cold at the Northlands Primary Winter Sports Festival and walked away with their heads held high.

A total of 27 schools participated in the chess, netball and rugby festivals, which took place over April 17 and 18.

Umhlali’s chess players faced fierce competition on the black and white board and after a battle of kings and queens, Umhlali won by half a point.

The relieved and excited chess winners received a trophy, which was donated by Spur.

The Umhlali girls worked hard on the netball court and made it to the semi-finals, where they played against Our Lady of Fatima School.

The thrilling game went to a sudden death playoff, which Fatima clinched.

The Umhlali rugby boys played seven games in total, winning three, drawing two and losing two.

The team is made up of many grade six pupils, which is promising for Umhlali’s future rugby games.

Umhlali coaches, parents and pupils were fine ambassadors for Umhlali Preparatory School at the Winter Festival.
