Burning rubber at Idube Raceway

Ashton pupil on top form in karting championships.

The second round of the KZN regional karting championship was held at Idube Raceway on Sunday, June 14, which saw drivers from all over the province go head-to-head to qualify for the tightly contested next round.

Ashton International College pupil Benjamin Habig was on top form in his DD2 Tonykart go-kart, winning all three heats and placing first for the day. Starting from second on the grid after qualifying, Habig went on to overtake Mitchell Licen and win the first heat in style.

The second heat commenced with much anticipation as Habig crossed the start line in pole position, having maintained the lead from start to finish, which secured pole position for race three.

Initially, Habig had competition from fellow drivers Luca Canderle and Mitchell Licen, but ultimately opened a big gap and posted the fastest lap time.

Habig is the reigning DD2 KZN champion and had a good day at the office, now leading the 2015 KZN DD2 Championship.

In the DD2 Masters class, three times world champion Cristiano Morgado also notched up three wins for the day in his Tonykart.

Morgado started from pole in all three heats, and leads this category.

Young Dominic Lincoln, who competes in the Junior Max class also in a Tonykart, continued to show improvement, and is becoming more and more competitive with each race. Lincoln finished second overall for the day and shows great promise moving forward into future qualifiers.
