In October the EXSPO International Sports Olympiad is being held in Lucknow, India in which 14-year-old, Curro Mount Richmore student, Chantel van der Merwe, is hoping to compete.

The event is a four day sports festival for school children in the under 14 to under 18 age groups.

The competition consists of events in five different sporting areas; track and field, judo, karate, soccer and basketball.

A total of 59 schools from 11 countries take part, one of these being a South African team organised by the Foundation for English, Mathematics, Sciences, Sports and Innovation of South Africa.

In 2013, then Umhlali Preparatory student Chantel, was part of the South African team that travelled to India to compete.

They were very successful in the athletics events and returned home with 25 medals – nine gold, 14 silver and two bronze, winning the athletic championship.

Chantel achieved excellent results as an individual; placing first in all of her events.

She received three gold medals and was awarded Victrix Ludorum for best junior athlete.

This year Chantel was invited to compete in the same international sporting event from October 24 to 28.

She will be taking part in the 100m, 200m and 400m races as well as the long jump and relay races, but needs R18 000 in order to cover the costs in order to defend her title.

Chantel’s parents have been raising money in order to make the event a possibility for their talented daughter.

They have raised R4000 so far and still need R14000 before October 18.

To make a contribution, contact her parents Chantel or Johan on 084 569 3665 or 084 312 1070 or email [email protected] or [email protected] for banking details.
