Guests of the launch of at Gateway’s Ster-Kinekor’s own IMAX theatre and the premier of Thor: The Dark World last Thursday were treated to a real ‘red carpet’ experience.

Scrumptious canapés and cocktails flowed freely as movie goers posed to have their photo taken with Thor before the first screening on the largest screen in the country.

Five Courier followers on Facebook who had received double tickets to the launch were also there to enjoy the show.

Durban now has the only IMAX in South Africa.

Representing IMAX at the Gateway opening was Giovanni Dolci, VP Theatre Development, EMEA at IMAX Corporation, who stated: “We are delighted to welcome Ster-Kinekor to the IMAX business and believe our partnership will not only raise our visibility in South Africa, but will also set the stage for further mutual growth opportunities in the region. Our agreement with South Africa’s number-one exhibitor at the country’s number-one cinema complex represents the ideal scenario under which to establish IMAX’s first commercial multiplex entry into the country.”

The next title to be released on IMAX will be the popular Hunger Games sequel, Hunger Games: Catching Fire on Friday, 22 November. This is followed by the release of Ender’s Game on 06 December, while the eagerly awaited The Hobbit sequel, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, launches on 13 December, to round-up the IMAX releases for this calendar year.
