The sewing machines are a-buzz once a week at the Wednesday Bridge Club, when ladies from all walks of life meet to sew and teach.
Bernina gave the club a special discount in order to buy a handful of sewing machines which are used to teach disadvantaged ladies to make blankets and quilts.
Once the ladies have mastered the art of the needle and thread, they have the opportunity to buy the sewing machine at a discounted price, take it home and pay it off monthly.
Their teacher, Rose Burgess, teaches the ladies how to make everyday useful items that can be sold and generate an income for the budding entrepreneurs.
The grateful ladies are eager to learn and cannot wait to get sewing for a better future.
The club’s Di Bowser said they hope to teach the ladies a skill that they can enjoy and use, but it can only be achieved through hard work and dedication.
“If you pay attention and practice at home, it will start paying off one day. Soon you could all be earning money from the work you are learning here,” she told the excited group.
And so the machines started buzzing again and slowly the patches will start forming cuddly quilts.
