Murder on Mondays is the name of the production that is set to keep audiences entertained from July 9 to 18 and stars two of Ballito’s own.
Amy Wright and Zoe Walsh, who both matriculated from Crawford College North Coast last year and are now film students at the Art Film Drama Academy, were chosen to be part of the Blunt Productions play at Seabrooke’s Theatre at Durban High School.
“Murder on Mondays is a comic play about an amateur theatre group trying to put on Shakespeare’s Macbeth,” said Wright, who plays the dark and rather mean Jessie James a.k.a Goth Witch.
“It is a crime comedy full of surprises, taking the audience through the typical stresses of making a production, which in this case is rumored to be cursed and haunted by the vengeful ghost of Macbeth,” said Walsh, who plays the happy-go-lucky Mellie Michaels a.k.a Hippie Witch.
Both girls love being on stage, although Walsh sees her career behind the scenes rather than in the limelight.
“I had always wanted to be a dolphin trainer or a producer, making documentaries that make a difference and teaching people something new and memorable,” said Walsh, who gave up on the the dolphin trainer idea when the film bug bit.
For Wright it was not always that clear.
“I had planned to study physiotherapy in Cape Town, but my drama teacher at Crawford, Melissa Wood, said there is not a chance that she would let me do anything but drama,” she said with a chuckle.
“I love comedy, because you can tell if the audience is enjoying the show or not and hearing them laugh is so encouraging, even when they laugh at things that were not supposed to be funny,” she said.
Walsh also enjoys comedy, although she said that it is important for an actor to try different roles, so as to not get stuck in a rut.
“You should never become a comfortable actor, because once you reach a comfort zone, you do not grow or learn anymore,” she said.
The two girls are learning a lot from the production’s producers, Saná Siddiqi and Mikhale Singh, as well as director Preven Reddy and said the cast have become like a little family.
“We have so much fun on and off stage and learn from each other all the time,” said Wright.
