How to paint your nails like a pro

A few tips to help you wave goodbye to bad nail days.

Whether you like the classic clear, sexy red, serious black or pretty pastel look on your nails, we all go through the same mission to get that perfect salon-look finish.

With these easy tips, you will have a headache-free home manicure that will last for more than five minutes.

1. Once you have removed your previous nail polish, soak your nails in a bowl of water and white vinegar.

The vinegar will remove any oils or moisturiser left on your nails and will give your nail polish a longer life expectancy, as it will stick to the nail better.

2. Put Vaseline on your cuticles to catch those stray swipes.

Make sure not to get any Vaseline on your nails, as your nails should be clean for the nail polish to stick. Once you are done painting, simply clean the Vaseline off the cuticles and voila.

3. Apply your base coat, which will prevent your nails from being stained by the nail polish. Let it dry.

TIP: Give the base coat a minute or so and then dip your hands in ice water to dry your nails perfectly.

4. Now, apply the colour of your choice using the following method:

Start towards the bottom middle of your nail and then work your way down, up and to the sides.

5. Avoid those terrible smudges by applying a few thin coats, rather than one thick one. It takes more time, but it is worth it.

6. Right, now apply the top coat. Remember to also coat the edge of your nail to prevent those annoying chips from destroying your perfectly manicured nails.

TIP: Apply the top coat before your nail polish is completely dry, so that it soaks in better.

7. Do not blow on your nails or sit in front of a fan, as the moving air could create bubbles in your nail polish. Remember the tip from point three.

8. Enjoy your perfect nails.
