If you see a lady collecting wood on the side of the road or at the beach, it is highly likely to be Jan Smorfitt.
The Westbrook wood wiz is passionate about creating bespoke decor and furniture items with wood that she finds everywhere and anywhere.
“My husband, Pieter, has always dabbled in wood and we often made little presents for friends or our childrens’ teachers,” said the cheerful Smorfitt.
These presents became so popular and sought after that she realised there was potential for a business opportunity.
“We started Heartwood Design informally about three years ago, but it was only when we went to the Decorex Show in March this year, that it really took off.”
She said they pride themselves in creating custom-made, hand-crafted items using recycled wood or wood from sustainable sources.
Whether you want hanging hearts, candle stick trunks, always blooming wooden flowers, mirrors, bed headboards, braai trolleys or crates, the Smorfitts will make it for you.
“We always say, if you can Pin it, we can make it,” she said with a heartfelt chuckle.
