Restaurant Review: Zebro’s

Chicken wings and burgers for lunch.

Zebro’s have only been open for a few months at Tiffany’s Centre and I have been looking forward to sampling their menu.

It is the first Zebro’s franchise to open in KZN. They have quite a different set up there as it is a combo store running in conjunction with The Fish and Chip Co. This is a genius idea as it gives you more choice under the same roof.

Just like The Fish and Chip Co, the first thing I noticed was the price. It is so well priced, which is what takeaway should be! All the chicken is done on charcoal fires, nothing is pre-cooked and is all done to order. We ordered our food as a sit down meal.

I had the the snack wing meal as I have always maintained that if you can do wings right the rest of the chicken dishes are easy. I have a simple test to see how good the wings are. If you take the middle section of the wing just below the wing tip there are two bones in there. If you can simply slid them out without much effort and the wing stays intact then in my humble opinion you have done it right.

So how did their wings fair on my little test? They got 7/10 as there was just a little bit of meat still stuck to the bone but as far as they go I was very pleased with the taste. You get a choice of peri peri or BBQ. I asked for half and half and both were quite nice but the peri peri needs a bit more twang.

My friend had the chicken burger, the bun was very fresh and the patty was very tender – all in all a good burger.

The chips took me back to my youth growing up in the South of Jo’burg where you could get the best ‘slap chips’ at the corner cafe (where instead of change for your order you got Chappies).

We also had a few side salads which were good but personally I think the coleslaw and potato salad had too much mayonnaise.

Overall, for fast food this was good quality for the price asked and I wish them all the best.

The chicken wings got a 7 out of 10.
