Take control of morning sickness
Tips to control nausea during pregnancy.
Locking yourself in a bathroom for nine months to avoid that potential morning sickness wave, away from a toilet, is no way to live.
Instead, Netcare Alberlito Hospital’s obstetrician and gynaechologist, Dr Leneque Lindeque has some expert do’s and dont’s to keep your food down and enjoy your pregnancy.
Do:
• Eat before you feel hungry.
• Snack regularly and have small meals. Focus on foods that have lots of protein or carbohydrates, but not a lot of fat such as crackers, bread and low fat yogurt.
• Drink cold, clear beverages especially fizzy or sour drinks such as ginger ale.
• Go for ginger.
• Smell fresh lemon, mint or orange.
• Brush your teeth right after you eat.
Don’t:
• Eat spicy food.
• Lie down straight after you eat.
• Take vitamins in the morning, rather take them at bedtime with a snack. The vitamin should contain 400 micrograms of folic acid.
• Eat, drink or smell anything that makes you feel nauseous.
• Go into stuffy rooms and hot places.
For more information about being a healthy mommy and therefore having a healthy baby, visit Alberlito on March 5 from 8am to 2pm for its Pregnancy Awareness Day, where Dr Lindeque will be giving a talk about mommies and babies.
