Find yourself with Disney’s new animation, Moana
Follow the journey of the strong, independent daughter of chief Tui, who is determined to find her purpose and save her people from the mysterious black death creeping onto her island.
On one of the hottest days so far this year, I found myself sitting on a comfy, air-conditioned cinema seat ready to watch Disney’s new promising animation, Moana.
As is tradition with animated movies, you get a short film beforehand to get you in the mood. Inner Workings – which reminded me of the recent Pixar film Inside Out, except that instead of emotions, the focus is on our internal organs – was so delightful it was almost better than the movie it was opening for.
But Moana did not dissapoint. This is no ordinary child. This child is friends with the sea.
The scene where Moana first plays with the ocean as a chubby toddler was pure magic.
I instantly fell in love with the toddler waddling across the beach, holding a big leaf over a baby turtle protecting him from the birds while he hurries to the water.
Interestingly, Moana is not a fairy tale where boy meets princess with a happily ever after story line.
Instead it follows the journey of the strong, independent daughter of chief Tui, who is determined to find her purpose and save her people from the mysterious black death creeping onto her island.
She does get some masculine help along the way from the shape-shifting, narcissistic demigod, Maui, but their friendship remains purely platonic and has a character building twist.
The feel-good, family movie will leave you feeling energised and ready for new adventures, while whistling the Shiny tune of the psychedelic, self-obsessed, blinging monster crab, Tamatoa.
