Boats, bunnies and beers
While families enjoy the afternoon festivities, sailors will be hard at work competing for the annual Bar Anniversary Mug in the Bay
As part of their 125th birthday celebrations, Point Yacht Club (PYC) invites you to a chilled Saturday afternoon Beer and Bunny on the Bay on Saturday, January 28.
While families enjoy the afternoon festivities with picnics on the newly revamped lawns outside the club as the sun sets, sailors will be hard at work competing for the annual Bar Anniversary Mug in the Bay.
Defending champion and Rear Commodore of Dinghies at PYC, Myles White said it was fitting to have the Beer and Bunny on the Bay on the day they sail for the Bar Anniversary Mug.
“Many years ago, PYC did not have a pub and members had to bring their own beers down to the club for a drink after sailing. After much contentious debate about applying for a liquor license a motion was finally passed to apply.
One of the strongest opponents to this was Charlie Allen, yet, once the license was granted, he was one of the most active members in helping to build the pub. The facility was named “Charlie’s” in his honour.
“The pub was officially opened on January 28, 1953, and in celebration of that anniversary a silver mug – which is an oversized beer tankard – was donated and is sailed for annually. The date of the event has usually not matched with the actual anniversary, but in 2017 as luck would have it, we have it set for the correct date.”
Commodore for the Point Yacht Club, Craig Millar said they are greatly looking forward to this event.
“If curries and beers are not your thing, do not worry as there will be other options available! It should be a wonderful late afternoon, enjoying the outdoors while listening to some live music.”
Confirmed breweries include the family-run The Standeaven Brewery from Hillcrest and the proud Durbanite craft brewery, Poison City among others.
Music has been organised with Durban’s very own Gavin Ferguson sharing his unique rock, soulful yet smooth sounds. Ferguson will be complimented by the young, emerging local duo Lyall Erasmus and Nick Pitman.
Erasmus, a wizard on classical guitar, is studying music at UKZN Howard College. She will be supported by the hugely talented Pitman on electric guitar.
The event starts at 3pm and entry costs R60 and allows you to sample your first beer.
