Missions Ablaze heats up the kitchen

Non-profit organisation Missions Ablaze plans to run a chef course teaching people how to feed themselves and earn a living while doing so

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

True to the popular idiom, non-profit organisation Missions Ablaze, responsible for feeding more than 550 of the poor in the Durban area daily, plans to run a chef course teaching people how to feed themselves and earn a living while doing so.

Driven by love and the desire to help people, the now 69-yearold Tinus Lindeque started Missions Abaze in Tongaat after he realised how desperate the situation was.

Eighteen years later his grandson Hein van der Merwe followed in his footsteps and now handles day-to-day operations.

“We have always served the the community by providing food on a daily basis.

This year we decided to offer an affordable chefs training school from our premise in Tongaat.

The one year course is aimed at people who want to become chefs but their family and financial situation does not allow for them to pay R120 000 per year for the average chef course.”

Qualified sue chef Michael Krob will be heating up the kitchen and sharing his 39 years of knowledge and expertise with the lucky students.

“I will be guiding the students through all the necessary steps on how to become a good chef.

The course will be split into four semesters and will start with the basics.

The course is not accredited but at the end of the course students will receive a recommendation and should be able to do menu planning and cater for corporate functions and weddings.

They will also know how to work out the cost of food, do stock control, understand franchising and do banqueting.

The one-year course is planned to start in the second week of February with a minimal fee of R15 000 a year,” he said.

Applicants need to have completed matric with high marks in English and maths. For more information or to donate to Missions Ablaze contact: 032-9450185 or Hein van der Merwe at 083 554 3610.
