Some restaurants stick in my mind for all types of reasons besides just how the food was. Be it for the venue, service, consistency or value for money. So what does La Piazza have to offer?
Firstly, what always impresses me is their plating. They have some of the best presented food on the Dolphin Coast.
Next it would be the venue, the outside area is brilliant for children (I know mine have the best time there).
A beautiful plate is one thing but how does the food itself rate? Well I can honestly say that I have enjoyed most of my meals there. I have always found the food to be of a high standard.
For lunch we had a carpaccio starter: thinly sliced, seared beef fillet dressed with parmesan and rocket, drizzled with basil pesto and balsamic vinegar.

What I really liked was that they added a seasoning to the outside of the fillet before they sliced it, which lifts up the dish as a whole and makes it really enjoyable.
We sampled a dish off their lunch specials menu, which are all priced under R100. We had the deboned pork rib salad. It was nice, light and thoroughly enjoyable.
It’s not a massive portion and at R75 we did not expect it to be, but it was the perfect size for a lunch item. The pork was tender and had good flavour with the soy dressing. I would love to have a full rack of ribs done like that.
We also had a top class Napoletana pizza topped with capers, olives and anchovies – the base\topping relationship was dead on perfect. It was, however, a touch overdone on the top but nothing catastrophic.

For dessert I went with the chocolate fondant. Oh my word – it was divine! More than half the cake was still molten, which is exactly what you want. I’m a big fan of hot and cold combinations, so a hot molten centre paired with some good quality ice-cream was perfect for me.
My only complaint here is that they are in the higher price bracket. I’ve been there on two separate occasions as a table of two. The first time we went a bit large and ate properly – our bill was around R800.
Our damage for this review come to R370, which is not half bad. It all depends on how you go about your meal.
I think it is safe to say that eating out in general is not cheap anymore. So don’t blame the restaurant.
