The Courier shines at Caxton Awards
The glittering event saw journalist Erica Abrahams scoop the Most Promising Newspaper Journalist award
North Coast Courier journalist Erica Abrahams was still in shock as she sipped on her Gem smoothie and spoke about the moment her name was announced as Most Promising Newspaper Journalist at the Caxton Awards in Johannesburg last Thursday.
“Hearing my name as the second nominated candidate was already incredible and I remember thinking it would be so cool to win. When they announced my name as the winner, I could not believe it.
“I was waiting for them to have a Steve Harvey moment,” said the 22-year-old Abrahams from Seatides, who did her internship at the Courier in 2013.
While studying a BA in communication science through Unisa, the little lady dabbled in technical writing and social media communication jobs and made her way back to the Courier as a full-time journalist in April 2016.
“I was new to reporting and I am thankful for the guidance I have got from my editors and for their support. I find politics interesting and I enjoy finding out what people do not already know.”
While she might come across as a petite toy pom, she is a real feisty Jack Russell when it comes to getting a the story.
“I do not care about being annoying, I will not stop until I find out what the real story is.”
One of her favourite stories so far was covering the Glenhills protests last year.
“Protests are the best because you get to know people while they are marching and that is where you get the actual story. There is always more than meets the eye.”
She said the Caxton Awards evening was very exciting and she particularly enjoyed the hilarious Riaad Moosa and the talented Matthew Mole.
Until the next protest, Abrahams is planning on spending some of her R15 000 prize money on a new tattoo, while keeping a close eye on the politics on the North Coast.

Get-It almost got it again
The trendy Get-It Ballito Umhlanga girls were dazzling in their outfits true to the Steampunk-themed Caxton Awards and were proud to make runner up for Best Get It Mag with Editor Leah Shone being runner-up for Best Get It Journalist.
“We were thrilled to have placed in the top three Get It magazines in the country for the fourth year in a row. We received very positive feedback about the quality of our editorial and our magazine as a whole.
“Congratulations to Erica on her award of most promising journalist – a huge accomplishment when taking into consideration the fact that Caxton has over 120 free newspaper titles in its stable,” said Shone.
