Telling stories with silhouettes

The NGO's next art event will be held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament Hall, Virginia on April 8

Founded in 1976, North Coast Artists is a non-profit organisation that focuses on raising money through art.

A member of the organisation, Gloria Howard said that an artists event is organised every month where one artist is invited to showcase their work to those present.

“The money we raise is donated to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League every year. These events are a great way to meet and greet fellow art enthusiasts and chat over a cup of tea and snacks.”

The NGO’s next art event will be held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament Hall, 2 Newport Avenue, Virginia on April 8 where contemporary woodcut artist and designer Sthenjwa Luthuli will demonstrate techniques of fine art painting.

In 2011 Sthenjwa enrolled for the Velobala Saturday art classes hosted by the African art Centre at the Durban University of Technology.

The Velobala classes offer visual art instruction and fine arts education to young creative artists located away from the traditional urban clusters of arts infrastructure.

He has participated in a number of group exhibitions in KZN and Johannesburg, in 2012 he further participated in various exhibitions in Bremen, Germany and completed a mural project in the Concordia Tunnel, which runs along the collections and in the international collection of the Leiterin der stadtischen Galerie in Bremen Germany.

“My work is to tell stories using human figure silhouettes and motifs to create work that is both beautiful and compelling, yet alluding to the complexities of the world basedon how I view the world. I believe that the way we live our lives should be more spiritually connected to our ancestral ways,” said Luthuli.

Entrance fee to the art event is R40 and includes snacks, tea & coffee. For more information email infonorthcoastartists@gmail.com. Cell: 0836571901
