Pretty in ‘Pinc’ for cancer

'Cocktails for Cancer' was organised by non-profit organisation, Pinc - Isithunzi project

It was an evening of pampering, where about 60 woman had their make-up and manicures done while sipping on cocktails, and all was done for a good cause.

‘Cocktails for Cancer’ was organised by non-profit organisation, Pinc – Isithunzi project.

The NPO focuses on providing toiletries, underwear and education on cancer to young woman and teenagers.

Co-founder Lisa Smart-Campos said their guests all arrived with generous hearts.

“We had an amazing turn-out.

“We placed a big bucket at the entrance where the ladies could drop off toiletries and by the end of the night, the bucket was full. We also collected 625 packets of sanitary pads.”

Lisa and her husband founded Pinc in 2010 after seeing first hand the need for personal hygiene products for schoolgirls from poor communities.

“A lot of people are willing to donate second hand clothing to shelters and orphanages but no one thinks about the underwear and sanitary pads.

“These are personal items that are taken for granted. We have seen rape victims who do not have underwear.

“Children from shelters who have to share underwear and in one case I met an 11-year-old who was using underwear that was meant for a three-year-old.”

Pinc also focuses on educating young woman on how to recognize the signs of cancer.

“Girls as young as 13 have been diagnosed with cancer. We teach theses young woman how to check for lumps on their breasts and also what symptoms to look out for. We are also starting to provide underwear for boys.”
