Be the change in your voice

As the world celebrated World Voice day on Sunday, continue to be the change in your voice, and value your unique and precious gift

Every day, for most of the day, we’re using our voices as our primary mode of communication.

This leads to the all-important question: are we aware of the risks of potential vocal injury?

Singers, teachers, telemarketers, lawyers, broadcasting journalists, sales representatives and public speakers are at a greater risk for vocal injury, hence it is imperative that our voices be taken care of to prevent vocal disorders caused by overuse or misuse.

Vocal disorders may present in any of the following ways:

  • •A hoarse or raspy voice; sudden inability to reach high notes when singing; a new deeper voice quality; a ‘raw’ or painful throat; strained or effortful voicing; excessive throat clearing; a temporary or complete loss of voice.
  • •Vocal care involves preserving our voices to ensure that we utilise our voice in the best way we possibly can.
  • •A healthy lifestyle includes exercise, sleep, and a balanced diet.
  • •Avoiding spicy foods may help to prevent acid reflux which could cause voice disorders.
  • •Stay hydrated by drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water a day.
  • •Limit alcohol and caffeine which may dehydrate the vocal cords. Don’t smoke and avoid second hand smoking.
  • •Avoid the use of mouthwashes that contain alcohol, rather gargle with a warm salt-water solution.
  • •Using a humidifier in your home during winter or when the air is dry.
  • •Practice good breathing. Ensure there are times in the day when your voice gets a rest.
  • •Use your voice wisely and avoid speaking when your voice is hoarse or tired. Alternatively, send a text or an email to prevent further vocal injury.
  • •Avoid speaking in noisy environments.

As the world celebrated World Voice day on Sunday, continue to be the change in your voice, and value your unique and precious gift.
