Putting the love back into hip-hop
The Nirvana Hip Hop Club (NHHC) in Groutville is determined to change the perception of the genre
Hip-hop music has often been stereotyped as the music of criminals and drug addicts and a music without a positive message.
However, the Nirvana Hip Hop Club (NHHC) in Groutville is determined to change the perception of the genre.
They want to make hip-hop speak to the people, touch their souls and bring a postitive message. They believe it is time for the positive side of hip-hop to be in the spotlight.
There are so many young hip-hop artists in the townships of KwaDukuza, trying, by all means, to break into the music industry. However due to lack of support they end up giving up on their talent.
NHHC programmes manager Malusi Zulu said the club was formed after they attended workshops that were held at the Luthuli Museum by different music companies last year.
“We realised the knowledge we had gained at those workshops had to be shared with the youth of KwaDukuza. That is how the idea of starting this club was born,” said Zulu.
He said they wanted to turn the club into a platform to grow local artists.
“We will create a database of our artists and work with them to get recognition at the higher-level institutions of music. To do that we need to make hip-hop a music that accommodates everyone and we need to have our own unique style,” said Zulu.
For example he said it was rare to find the older generation attending hip-hop events. He believes this needs to change.
Luthuli Museum heritage educator, Thulani Thusi, said the museum supports the club, providing a venue for their meetings and they will be working closely with them.
“We cannot sit back and not offer support to this great initiative of the youth,” said Thusi.
Anyone who wants to join the club is welcome. They also need financial assistance to get the club on it’s feet. Contact Zulu at 062 788 5398 or email merru678@gmail.com.
