Miss Ballito finalist to host beach cleanup this Sunday
De Sousa would like to see families come together to spend a day on the beach, learning not only about swimming safety, but also beach conservation
“If I can prevent one person from drowning, I have done a good job.”
Professional swimmer, head of Learn to Swim at the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation South Africa and current Miss Ballito finalist, Bianca de Sousa has made swim safety and environmental awareness her mission.
“As a passionate swimmer and swimming instructor, I firmly believe in water safety initiatives to prevent drowning in and around South Africa, starting in my home town, Ballito.
“I have chosen to do a beach clean-up and swim safety programme as my Miss Ballito community project and will be hosting a fun, family day on Sunday, May 7 at 9am starting at Four Poles (north of Tiffany’s beach) and Chaka’s Rock tidal pool coming together at Salt Rock Main Beach,” said De Sousa, who has gone through quite a transformation in the Miss Ballito competition.
“I have always been a tomboy, so taking part in Miss Ballito really threw me out of my comfort zone.
“The reason I entered was because I like that Miss Ballito focuses largely on community work, which has always been close to my heart, and learning to love yourself.”
She said she always struggled with her self image and through Miss Ballito she has learned to love her swimmer’s shoulders, feet and hands, which she used to think of as negative attributes.
“Being a swimmer, you do not think about your self image. My name has never been important, what was important was the swimming time linked to my name. I have grown and learned to feel comfortable in my own skin through Miss Ballito and I now look forward to dressing up and looking after my image.”
De Sousa would like to see families come together to spend a day on the beach, learning not only about swimming safety, but also beach conservation.
“As a local, I have seen rubbish and plastics on our beaches, which makes me sad as Ballito has beautiful beaches and we need to look after them. Besides cleaning up, we will also have CPR and first aid demos as well as volleyball, soccer and touch rugby for families to enjoy on the beach.”
