Etete woman lands lead radio drama role
Ashnee Ramsaywok has dreamt of becoming an actress since the age of ten
An Etete woman is proving that age is just a number and it is never too late to work towards your dreams.
Ashnee Ramsaywok has dreamt of becoming an actor since the age of ten.
At the age of 33, she finally got to live her dream when she was chosen for the lead role in a twenty-episode radio drama for Lotus FM radio.
Ramsaywok put her dream on hold when she became a mother, but now that she is a single parent to two teenagers she started looking for drama work.
“I wrote to SABC studios in Johannesburg and was called for an audition last December. I was asked to play a minor role in a twenty-episode series named A Woman’s Own,” said Ramsaywok.
After that experience, she spent three months praying for a call for another role.
The call finally came for her to take the lead role in a radio drama “Bottle Up”, and she is all smiles as she explains her role.
“I will be playing the role of Savy, a wise, caring woman in her mid-60s. She lost her husband at a young age and is the mother of an only daughter (Pammy). She also lost a child at a very young age. She is also a granny of Nikki, who is very disturbed by her husband’s abuse of alcohol.”
The passionate actor said she has also written a script for a local movie production, but that it has not yet been produced due to lack of funding. The script is about restoring communication between parents and their children. It mostly relates to her personal experiences.
She is also an HIV and Aids counsellor and motivational speaker and said she had been educating local schools about HIV.
“I have been judged by my family and community for becoming an Aids counsellor, because often it is infected people who choose to do this.”
She encouraged all young stars who are talented and cannot make it into the industry to never give up.
“It took me 13 years to get what I wanted and even if it took me longer I would have kept pushing.”
