Just one flight away from a modelling dream

The Courier spoke to the vibrant young lady to find out a little more about her modeling career

At just ten years old, KwaDukuza’s very own super model in the making, Yolanda Mthiyane has bagged more than 10 titles, and now has a chance of a lifetime to jet off to the United States as one of the contestants at the Little Miss Universe pageant in July this year.

The Courier spoke to the vibrant young lady to find out a little more about her modeling career and what it would mean to her to travel overseas.

Q: When did you start modeling?

A: I started modeling at the age of four. I have always enjoyed being in the limelight and I love being able to learn new skills and techniques that help me improve myself. I also like the pretty dresses. Some of the titles I have won are, Miss Mzansi Africa, Miss Upper Highway, Miss Little KZN and I am now eyeing the Miss Little King & Queen World title and the Little Miss Universe title. About a month ago I won the Miss Pre-Teen crown while representing KwaZulu-Natal in Pretoria.

Q:What would it mean to you if you were able to raise enough money for your trip to the United States.

A: It would mean the world to me! I have really put my heart and soul into modelling with a dream of eventually being able to travel overseas, meet new people and represent my country at a huge pageant like the Little Miss Universe.

Q:Have you been doing any fundraising?

A: My parents have been trying their best and when they told me that there is a chance I might not be able to go to America, I was so disappointed. I started doing chores to earn money and I gave my mother all the money that I had in my piggy bank.

Q: What are your hobbies aside from modelling?

A: I love, love, love dancing. I was sponsored a scholarship with Kloof Primary school where I will attend from grade five to matric. I am also a regular volunteer at Sibusisiwe Orphanage. I feel like the children there need more love and I like to show that to them.

I visit the orphanage every Sunday. Describing Yolanda as a little girl with a big heart, her mother Sarah Mthiyane said Yolanda’s dream to represent South Africa might not be realized due to not having raised enough money for plane tickets.

“We have already received monetary support from people and organisations like KwaDukuza municipality and the Spar in KwaDukuza.

“We still need R47 000 for plane tickets for the two of us as she obviously cannot travel alone. The problem with plane tickets is that the price always increases. When we started raising money, the tickets were R35 000 and now they are R47 000.

“We would appreciate whatever help is available to us to help raise money.

“Yolanda’s career started as a model for retail stores such as Fashion Fusion and Cutie & Cutties and she has a real passion for it. I just want my daughter’s dream to come true,” she said.
