A crafter’s kaleidoscope in Mandeni
The Mandeni Sibusisiwe Community Hall was awash with colour as vivid beadwork and art took centre stage
First lady of South Africa Bongiwe NgemaZuma and people from across Mandeni attended the annual arts and crafts exhibition last Wednesday.
The Mandeni Sibusisiwe Community Hall was awash with colour as vivid beadwork and art took centre stage.
The show began with a parade that started at the Sundumbili Police station, led by rickshaws.
Zulu women and maidens were dressed in their traditional attire as they sang and marched through the Mandeni township.

Thembani Mgenge from Okwethu Co-operative said the annual exhibition helps them to sell their work and meet new customers.
“This is an excellent networking opportunity,” said Khuleleni Gumede from Bambanani Primary Co-operative.
Mandeni mayor Sphesihle Zulu told the crafters that this was an important event on the municipality’s calendar.
“The beautiful craft and handwork you display here today makes us as Mandeni ponder how we can best market this craft. We want to prevent a scenario where a person travels to Durban station to buy crafts rather than supporting our local crafters. We pledge to assist you to market your craft work,” said Zulu.

The first lady Bongiwe Ngema-Zuma was thankful for being part of the event.
“I would like to thank you for inviting me to this beautiful event and I would like also to thank Nonhlanhla Mbusi of Mathonsi Simunye Community project for the great effort they have shown.
“I am honored to announce that their work had been exhibited even in countries like Australia and China,” she said.
The first lady urged the crafters to try follow suit and market their craftwork in foreign countries.
