Festival of India comes to Tongaat

The event was a perfect chance to showcase culture and heritage to the larger community while educating the youth.

Loud beats of the tabla and an array of colourful traditional attire with hints of spice filling the air, signalled the Festival of India that came to Tongaat after 40 years this past weekend.

The four-day event organised by the International Society for Krishna was held as an outreach programme to connect people of diverse cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds through spirituality.

Organising chairman of the festival of India Aravina Naidu said the event was a perfect chance to showcase culture and heritage to the larger community while educating the youth.

“The festival exposed people to different arts, crafts, languages, culture and food from the various regions of India in a festive setting.”

Thousands of people from all age groups streamed into Tongaat to enjoy the delicious free food, take part in the chariot festival, pray and be festive with many other entertaining events.

Naidu said they served more than 8 000 plates of food during the event and due to the popularity, the festival would now be an annual event in Tongaat.
