Pioneering family bridges generations

The Robert family emigrated from Mauritius to South Africa in the 40s when they realised that their family future there was uncertain.

About 150 Robert family members came from across KZN for a family reunion that was held at All Souls Anglican Church on Saturday.

One of the organisers, Janine Mallandain, said the last reunion of the ex-Mauritian farming family was held about eight years ago.

“It was a weekend of fun for our family and hopefully we will be having reunions more regularly.”

The family emigrated from Mauritius to South Africa in the 40s when they realised that their family future there was uncertain.

Pierre and Marguerite Robert arrived on South African soil with their 11 children, six boys and five girls, and they and their descendants went on to become one of the founding families of the North Coast sugar industry.
