Township roses on the cat walk

The beauty pageant was held in line with the sports day in celebration of the Youth Day.

It was all glitz and glamour at the Miss South Beauty Pageant competition held in Shakaskraal on Saturday night and a night to remember for Nombuso Maphanga.

The young lady was crowned the 2018 Miss South, which came as a big surprise for the University of Zululand, marketing first year student from Shakaskraal.

“I started modelling as a hobby. I am so happy about the win and the excitement around my community is overwhelming,” said the fresh-faced 18-year-old.

She is now planning to organise more beauty pageants and sports competitions in her community.

“I am a very shy person but I was able to pull myself up, enter the competition and I won. I believe there are more girls out there who like modelling but they are shy, especially the plus size women.”

Founder of the Seroke Modeling and promotions agency, ward seven concillor Bonginkosi Dindi and 1st princess Sbongile Thusi.

Maphanga was competing with girls from Etete, Shayamoya, Nkobongo and Shaka’s Head and she walked away with a Mr Price clothing voucher of R250 and R500 cash.

The 1st princess prize was taken by Sbongile Thusi (19) from Velani Township, Etete and the 2nd princess was won by Nonhle Mzimela (16) from Shayamoya.

The beauty pageant was held in line with the sports day in celebration of the Youth Day and the event was sponsored by Semcorp Siza Water and the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association.
