“People are always looking at me like I’m high on something, but I am just a free spirit. Knowing that God is real and I am free is all I need, the rest will work out,” said Shomon, who spent most of her childhood in Umdloti and is a well-known face at Splashy Fen and White Mountain.

“My name means ‘one who can communicate with God’. I have nourished my religion since the age of three and my love for singing started in church.”

She studied opera at Sahmyook University, Seoul, South Korea and won a scholarship to continue her studies at Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA.

Her music is soul food, an experience that absorbs you and makes you think and relax.

“My music is spiritual, theatrical, political – it always has a message. Writing music is my own healing and a voice to speak for people who can’t.”

Despite offers to sign up with music labels, she always stayed on her own.

“I have always had a strong guide, an energy inside me in all aspects which has kept me on my own mission.

“I avoid being successful in the traditional sense, because I think money makes you unhappy.”

When Shomon is not performing, she teaches private music lessons on the Dolphin Coast and hopes to soon put together an album featuring her pupils.

“I always thought I would only teach when I got old! But once I got started, I just fell in love with it. Kids are so talented. I love my nunus, but I am as passionate and strict with them as I am with myself,” explained Shomon who has a great love for animals and lives with her two dogs, Happylion and Starright.

To keep her grounded and on track, she has her own ‘avatar tail’ – a long strand of hair, beads and precious stones woven into each other which hangs down the nape of her neck all the way down her back.

“It taps me when I walk, reminding me to stand tall, be strong but gentle and to stay true to who I am.”
