Dirty dancing in the village

The addictive beat calls you, infusing a sultry rhythm into your hips as it draws you into a colourful group of people who melt together and speak one language – Salsa.
Concha Cafe Ballito turns into a cosmopolitan dance floor every Thursday evening and once a month on a Sunday when the Latin dance school Sabrosa Salsa turns up the volume.
Sabrosa Salsa’s Gillian Te Brugge said their mission is to bring KZN together through dance.

“We strive to create a social, fun-filled vibe within the dance classes and socials, where students get to meet a new and diverse group of friends, while de-stressing and getting fit at the same time,” said Te Brugge, who lives in Umdloti and is an audiologist by day.
She said Sabrosa Salsa was a pioneer in the dance world of Durban by being the only school to offer Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and Rueda de Casino.
“Salsa is such a wonderful way of connecting people and meeting new friends. Anyone is welcome to join us, whether you can or can’t dance. People from all over the world get together and have a great time.”

Concha manager Diogo Barendse said he heard about Gillian and Sabrosa Salsa through his sister who went to their classes in Durban.
“I was keen to collaborate with Gillian and bring Salsa to Ballito to resuscitate the old village, give it a heart beat and bring back some life. Salsa breaks all boundaries and classes, some people arrive in Ferraris, others walk up from the beach and we all dance together,” said Barendse, who has learnt a couple of moves himself.
Fellow Salsa lover and Ballito resident Liliam Longden said Concha is the perfect venue for their dancing because of the great vibe and the inviting setting.

“Diogo has supported us so wonderfully by giving us a space to share this clean, family-friendly entertainment. Kids enjoy an ice cream while mom and dad dance, we even have parents dance with their babies,” said Longden.
“Nobody is race or age conscious – it is just an incredible mix of beautiful people dancing. Salsa will connect you with people wherever you go in the world.”
