Afro-Indian fusion at the Sneddon this week

The collaboration consists of a collision of strings, with local genius front man Guy Buttery on guitar, Indian born sitar player and vocalist Kanada Narahari and award-winning bass-player Shane Cooper.

Don’t miss the special, once-off, mid-week concert showcasing the Guy Buttery Trio at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on Wednesday, October 10 at 7.30pm.

The collaboration consists of a collision of strings, with local genius front man Guy Buttery on guitar, Indian born sitar player and vocalist Kanada Narahari and award-winning bass-player Shane Cooper.

The three premiered two shows together to packed-out audiences at the 2018 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July and are now making their debut appearance in KZN.

During this enchanting 70-minute experience, Umdloti based Buttery will also swap out his guitar for the mbira, the African thumb piano while Narahari’s emotive voice will complement the various instruments. Cooper will feature on both electric and double bass.

Buttery said his new Afro-Indian fusion music sets up the perfect platform to take his intricate guitar-based compositions out of their solo guitar environment.

“The fusing of music from both of these rich and varied musical backgrounds is rooted in my progressive exploration of these worlds bridging the gap as well as re-imagining the realms between Africa and India,” said Buttery.

Both Cooper and Buttery are Standard Bank Young Artist award recipients: with Cooper receiving the Young Artist award for Jazz in 2013 and Buttery being acknowledged with the Young Artist award for Music earlier this year. For the first time in the forty year history – receiving this prestigious award as a non-classical artist.

Tickets start at R80 and are available through Computicket.
